How to Help With Depression
When suffering from depression, you feel that your hands are ties and that there is nothing much you can do about it. But there are certain mental skills which you can learn which will help you gain a feeling of control, and this is the first step in overcoming depression.
In order to successfully overcome depression you must examine your basic belief system - how you see the world, yourself and how you think. When people feel that they have little or no control over their environment they are more prone to depression and feelings of helplessness. Another thought process which can pave a pathway towards depression is that of non-acceptance. By this I mean patterns such as "It's not fair, why is life so hard on me?" or "I'm so unlucky". These beliefs in themselves create a feeling of helplessness. If you think that you are just unlucky, then it follows that you can do nothing about it.
Perhaps therefore a good starting point mentally is to take stock of where you are in your life at this moment in time, and to work upon accepting that wherever you are there is a reason that you are there; that for whatever reason, you are actually in the right place at the right time for the learning curve that you are meant to be on. This can be difficult to do - I'm not suggesting that it is easy or particularly palatable at first. But in choosing to approach your situation in this manner, you place yourself, perhaps for the first time, in a position of control. And just as a feeling of helplessness leads to depression, as you begin to feel in control your mood is given the chance to lift. At any rate, surely it's worth a try?
To make this task easier it is important to step back from your situation, in a mental sense; to stand back and observe from a distance. This is a skill which we can all learn. Some of us do it automatically, often without even realizing that it is what we are doing. Others just don't know how to do it. In actual fact it is very easy, and creates a mental state which is more conducive to creating positive change. Take a moment to imagine something for me and you will see how easy it can be to dissociate. Imagine that you are at this very moment floating out of your body, and drifting across the room from where you are and watch yourself as you read these words.
This is a very simple method of stepping back, enabling you to see things from a different perspective. This simple ability can be nurtured and developed in a way which will help you to step aside from what previously felt like a burden and instead to feel more free and light than before. Sometimes, the opposite is what can be needed; you may feel that you are always on the outside, looking in. In this case you can learn to associate, and step into your own pictures and turn pictures into reality.
There are in fact many mental skills which can be learned that can help tremendously in how you deal with feelings of depression. There are many different types of depression and there are ways in which you can be helped. Anti-depressant drugs in general treat the symptom, not the cause. These drugs do have a definite place and it is essential that you take your doctors' advice with regards to their relevance to your experience of depression. The learning of new mental skills is, in effect, complementary therapy.
You can learn to relax with hypnosis and step back more easily in this manner. Hypnosis is a state of relaxation which is both normal and natural. It allows access to your subconscious mind, thereby enabling deep rooted change to take place easily and quickly. There are a lot of hypnosis downloads available on the internet which can be used to retrain your brain to think in a different way, to see things in a new light. With the help of hypnosis downloads, you can learn to relax and give your mind and body the ability to overcome depression, providing opportunity to re-program your belief system quickly and effectively. You can learn new strategies for coping with day-to-day life, so that no matter what you are faced with, you remain free of depression so you can always "look on the bright side of life".
