There's little doubt that motorsport has a unique and enduring romance, with racing drivers figuring among the most iconic sporting heroes of the last 100 years. Accordingly, it's quite natural that many of us dream of gaining racing experience in a bid to follow in the tyre-tracks of legends such as Stirling Moss, Alain Prost, Jackie Stewart and Michael Schumacher (to pick just from the world of F1). Unfortunately, the barriers to entry into the world of motor racing can be many and varied. Of course, there's the extreme level of skill required to compete at the highest tiers of the sport, but there are also significant financial and logistical challenges to overcome. So what is required to become a racing driver?

Before you can start racing in the UK, you'll need to make sure that you've got the necessary licences from the sport's regulator, the Motorsports Association (MSA). Beginners will need the National B Competition Licence, which involves a combination of medical, driven and written assessments. The driven and written element of this licence is examined at approved ARDS Schools (Association of Racing Drivers Schools) such as the Silverstone Motorsport Academy.

Next you'll need to build up sufficient confidence and driving experience to make sure that you can give your first race day your best possible shot. Consider a racing course or some one-to-one driver coaching in order to make your day on the track as safe as possible for all involved. You'll also need to be sure that you're fully accustomed to all race day procedures, rules and race starts. Booking some coaching or testing time on the circuit you'll be racing on is especially important, particularly if you're unfamiliar with it.

Assuming all goes well and you're keen to continue racing, the chances are that you'll need to find some way of financing what is undoubtedly an expensive sport to compete in. Sponsorship generally follows initial success, but you can increase your chances of gaining financial backing through effective networking, hard work and determination. It is worth pointing out that of or than 30,000 licensed racing drivers in the UK, only around 100 have sponsors to fully fund their racing.

If you're keen to carve out a genuine career in motorsport and reach its very pinnacle, you'd do well to study the various routes that previous champions have taken on their way to success. Of course, it's worth being realistic and you should also consider financial costs and the type of racing that best suits you (and which you'll most enjoy).
